Distillation of aromatic plants such as lavender, thyme and bay laurel is planned not only according to vessel volume, but also according to the plant load, steam distribution, condenser and cycle targets.

## What equipment must work together for steam distillation?

The system does not consist only of a steam generator. The distillation vessel in which the plant is placed, the steam distribution section, the line carrying steam and volatile components, the condenser, and the oil-water separator work together. The generator is the heat source in this chain; product yield and quality are the result of the entire process.

## Why is vessel volume alone not sufficient?

Two vessels with the same volume may have different steam demands due to differences in the plant, filling density and moisture. The actual plant mass per batch, fresh or dry condition, target cycle time, steam inlet condition, line length and the number of batches per day are the main inputs for preliminary sizing.

## Steam distribution and the condenser should be evaluated together

If steam passes rapidly through certain areas of the plant bed, this may contribute to part of the load not being processed sufficiently. In addition to distribution geometry, it is also important that the condenser can condense the generated steam and volatile component load. Increasing the generator size alone does not correct inadequate distribution or an insufficient condenser.

If steam passes through the plant material, the feed water, steam line, contact surfaces and cleaning method must be compatible with the product process. The need for treatment is evaluated not only for scale control in the generator, but also in terms of the product and hygiene requirements of the process owner.

## Model selection and pilot testing

During the initial project meeting, the plant type, batch mass, target duration, dimensions of the existing vessel and condenser, electrical infrastructure and operating schedule are shared. When working with an unknown raw material or developing a new product, a small-scale trial is the most reliable way to verify the steam program and equipment compatibility.
